According to the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean) lore in the Puranas, Lord Dhanvantari (the divine physician and father of Ayurveda) emerged on this auspicious Trayodashi holding the sacred pot of Amrita (elixir of immortality). Step-by-Step Maha Lakshmi Puja Vidhi & Sequence:

According to sacred scriptures, Lord Yama (the God of Death) visited his loving sister River Yamuna on this day. Yamuna welcomed him with a holy red tilak, a lavish culinary feast, and heartfelt prayers. Touched by her unconditioned love, Yama granted a boon: any brother who receives the sacred tilak and hospitality from his sister on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya shall never suffer untimely demise or fearful distress.

Authentic Step-by-Step Bhai Dooj Tika Vidhi:

1. Seating Arrangement: The brother is seated on a clean wooden chowki (patta) or asan facing North or East. A rangoli of rice paste or flowers is made around the seating area.
2. Tilak Preparation: The sister prepares a sacred thali containing Roli (vermilion), Akshat (unbroken raw rice), Sandalwood paste, Dub ghaas (Bermuda grass), a dry coconut shell (Nariyal Gola / Khopra filled with mishri and dry fruits), and a ghee diya.
3. Application of Sacred Tilak: The sister applies the auspicious red vermilion and chandan tilak on the brother's forehead with her right thumb, affixing unbroken grains of rice and sacred Dub ghaas while praying for his longevity and victory.
